Miranda’s Story

Posted in: Greatest Meals

We took a catamaran excursion to a small nameless snorkling island off the coast near Puerta Vallarta. The waters were too rough to snorkle that day, so our guides, Ramon and Cristobal, moored the Pez Gato on a pristine beach framed by lush tropical palms and bouganvillea. Some fish were caught in the Pacific early that morning, which our adept guides casually cut up with sharp, wooden-handled knives pulled from their pockets. The raw fish was drenched with the juice of a dozen Mexican limons and a sprinkling of salt. Fresh diced tomato, onion, serrano chile, and cilantro were added to garnish the best Ceviche I’ve ever tasted. A package of crisp saltines and a cold Corona from the boat’s ice chest were all that were needed to perfectly complete the lazy mid-day meal.

Greatest Meals of Your Life Contest

Enter to Win our Greatest Meals of Your Life Contest and you could win a complete Dinner for Six.

Tell us your story! It might just win you a dinner for you and five guests at Scott’s on the River!

Many of the milestones in my life are great meals, like the tableside Caesar and Beef Wellington at the venerable Ernie’s (gone) in San Francisco or Speckmann’s on Church Street in SF where the Wiener Schnitzel covered the plate and the Steak Tartare had a raw egg yolk in the shell (many moons ago). More recently it was my wife’s birthday lunch at La Salette in Sonoma with my 88 year old father, visiting from Scotland, which included Feijoada, a deconstructed Brazilian beef stew and a starter of chorizo crusted scallops. Heaven on earth, and the rolls, the rolls!

Oysters!!!

He was a bold man that first ate an oyster.

Jonathan Swift

Is the legend real? Is the oyster an aphrodisiac? You betcha! A study in 2005, partially funded by the National Institute of Health actually proved the point. They actually measured oysters, mussels and clams together, so eat them all for a healthier libido.
